Q & A

What is a “blog”?

Just in case there are still a few web users out there who aren’t quite sure they understand what a blog even is, here’s the wiki :

A blog (short for web log) is a user-generated website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order.

Blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of most early blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual although some focus on photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), or audio (podcasting), and are part of a wider network of social media.

The term “blog” is a portmanteau, or, in other words, a blend of the words web and log (Web log). “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

In November 2006, blog search engine Technorati was tracking more than 57 million blogs.

WOW!!! 57 million??!  How is one to make their’s any-kind-of-unique when there are so many out there??!?

Well….a few ways. First, individuals are, well, individual. And if the right attention is  paid to making a site reflect the personality that writes the content, then chances are good that it will be just as unique as that person is.

But secondly, and of importance to business people considering a blog to go along with their websites, a blog is a way to let one’s client base know who YOU are, while the other site is informing them of WHAT you do. When there is a selection of choices out there, sometimes the feeling of personal connection with you is what will get you their business. It’s putting that very individuality to work for you.

So a blog should compliment, but not be identical to, your website. It should present a consistent image and message. While one is informative the other is persuasive. Turn your comments on and get some feedback. Let it be a little interactive.

The two can work in harmony and a blog can help your business become more profitable, popular, and personable. Email me today and let’s get started!
